As with any inhalation device, it is important to check for loose foreign objects before the device is used. The transparent material used in the construction of the In-Check Nasal device enables the user to make a visual check before inhalation. Patients should be prevented from exhaling through the device prior to use.
How to measure PNIF
1. Attach cushioned face to the mouthpiece of the In-Check device.
2. Reset the device by returning the red cursor to the start position.
3. Ask the patient to exhale fully.
4. Hold the In-Check horizontally, and ensure the face mask forms and air tight seal around the nose
5. Instruct patient to close their mouth and inhale forcefully through their nose (sniff).
6. Record the nasal inspiratory flow from the position of the red cursor against the scale and reset the In-Check.
7. Repeat steps 2 to 6 to obtain three readings, with the highest recorded in the patient's notes.
Notes:
A) Spectacles should be removed. The mouth must be closed.
B) Care should be taken to ensure that the mask forms an airtight seal against the face. Different masks may be available in a variety of sizes to suit different facial shapes.
C) The peak nasal inspiratory manoeuvre should be a short, sharp inspiratory action of about one-second in duration.
D) The mask should be disinfected between patients to avoid the risk of cross infection.
